A Growing Mother!

Motherhood is not a competition to see who has the smartest kids, the cleanest home, the healthiest dinners, the nicest clothes….Motherhood is Your journey with Your child.

Let’s begin our journey through a mother’s heart. This is my First and will be first. Yes I am talking about my baby girl, born in 2010. And I am so glad to share that she’s turned out to be a beautiful , gentle 9 years old charming girl. And now, especially now I decided to pen down some of my experiences as a growing mother, now that my girl has attained a Tween age “an age group of children that are in between being a child and teenager”. This is the time, when actually I realized that I am a 9 year old too, honestly I am only a 9 year old mother.

Never have I in my 15 years of Corporate experience undergone a training programme that teaches or enhances skills to deal with a child who is growing too fast, a child who will challenge you with plethora of nerve cracking questions, a child who already has learnt the art of multi-tasking, a child who is tech savvy and already coding games on scratch and splodder. Not only are they smart but each one of them is gifted, leaving absolutely No room for us to devise some fake stories to avoid their questions.

Children in this Tween phase of life are already jostling between the transition and changes both emotionally and physically. They are on their own pursuit to learn and take newer responsibilities at school and home. And we as parents are silently (with me it’s secretly) making note of all the changes yet pretending to be indifferent. (at-least in front of the kids), as if we never noticed anything. Smiling!!

But let me tell you a journey of a growing mother who’s raising a child, It is like Two Trees standing side by side, both growing in each other’s shadow. It’s a phase of collaborative learning for us “The Mum Daughter Duo”, where we both are learners and both are working towards solving this cryptic puzzle of life collecting several Milestones on our way to this beautiful journey of LIFE..

The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” – Tony Robbins

“Mamma, what are these ads all about on my Disney Channel for some Diapers that big girls are using? ”

I had a choice to ignore since she was only 9 years, but I thought to myself and decided to make her aware of the First Milestone every girl has to cross sooner or later.

Though I firmly believe in such situations, it’s completely a Mother’s decision to choose between taking or leaving the decision of discussing this important evolution of life.

As I started the conversation, it took me by surprise to see my girl’s interest to learn the secret behind these ads that have been bothering her for a while, she immediately closed her book, switched off the TV even though it played her favorite series “Best of Luck Nikki!” on Disney channel and then there was long silence in between us with her gleaming eyes concentrating mine. I was very selective in my choice of words to explain her this inevitable part of biological cycle, didn’t want her to get panic or fearful to face the situation whenever it arrives. And I went on and on… I explained her right from how God has differently created girls from boys, how Tweens transition and mature into a Teenagers. How quickly they are approaching to Puberty and shall soon or already begun witnessing big changes in their body. Soon many tween girls will experience their First Periods, how not to panic and deal with the situation calmly, who to contact when in school, in home not to worry as I will be there for her forevermore, how to use the sanitary pad and even have a knowledge on how hygienically it needs disposal.

Phew! I did it..Finally did it.. and this Journey of a Growing Mother began…only to achieve more and more Milestones of Life..

Very well articulated. The subtle handling of a sensitive topic with a permanent dilemma on how much to tell a girl of that age is well laced with facts and feelings.
Look forward to read more from you.

So beautifully you have portrayed the toughest tasks of a mother’s life. It’s our words only that plays the biggest role in creating a child’s perception about things in life.

What a start! Congratulations Neha for whilst most of us continue to tread this path, where we are constantly questioning our “ parenting”; how many of us put it down so eloquently!! Am a mother to a 23 year old , waiting to test her wings and a 18 year old , eager to cross the threshold and keen to fly.. and I still come ponder on the right ways to approaching all that comes their way!! Parenting is a tough job and it’s pretty quick when you change roles – from being a mother to a best friend.. and this is just the start.. for the journey s long!!!! All the best for the umpteen beautiful moments that await you..
